![]() The call and spirit of 1980s. It was an opening door into the heavens of flowers of mystery and romance. Raveendran Chennilode, Media person and broadcaster fascinated by Orchids started collecting Orchids and tried growing them. Down to the past and from the history of orchid lovers, there evolved a concept of conservation of native treasure orchids and to cater the greed for orchids with hybrid orchids from Asian Countries. History of Orchid Cultivation in Kerala. There was a time of orchids as a precious specimen being brought to Kerala from Singapore and Malaysia by the businessmen who travelled these countries. But only for hobby growing. Very few people started growing them for cut flowers. Mr. Somasundaram and Mr. Kutty are the names to be remembered. Mr. Radhakrisnan nephew of Kutty started commercial orchid cultivation for the first time in Trivandrum and Mr. Somasundaram in Kollam. Raveendran Chennilode, started giving programmes on Orchids through All India Radio and created an atmosphere to pubish orchid special pages by all the leading Dailies in Malayalam. Dr. J. Joseph Joint Director of Botanical survey of India happened to hear the Radio Programmes and congradulating Raveendran Chennilode, became the Orchid Guru to Raveendran. Dr. Joseph was the Founder Director of the first Orchidarium of India in Shillong. With the help of Dr. joseph, Raveendran tried various orchids from North East in Trivandrum and became successful with many species. Aarshasree Orchids It was by chance Fr.Dr. Thomas Felix, Director , DCMR and a visionary to find a way to give life to the Mentally Retarded persons came in touch with Raveendran as a media person. Knowing about the craze of Raveendran for Orchids Father Felix brought some South American Orchids to Raveendran. It was for the first time some unusual Carreabian orchids are taken to India. Only later these were identified as un named Oncidium hybrids, Cattleya Jewel box , a Laelia and another one lost without identification. With these hybrids and species orchids collected Raveendran felt proud of having Orchids. 1985, a small orchid garden was set up in Chennilode, part of the tiny village of Kadakampally,now in Trivandrum City Corporation. It was the beginning of the present Aarshasree Orchids. Later, it is history that like Dr. joseph who was the first Indian Judge for an International Orchid Show (in 1982 in Florida,USA.) Raveendran Chennilode was invited to International Orchid Shows in Malaysia (2009) and China(2010) and was a judge in those events. (Orchidologist and former Director of Botanical Survey of India and a world famous scientist for whose memory many orchids are there named after him.)
